Bridging the Gap Between FINAOS and Posts

During our user testing we discovered that there was confusion around the core concept of the app: "posting to FINAOS (GOALS)". Almost all participants did not make the correlation between a FINAO and a post. This diagram shows how we managed to solve this critical issue.

Design Process

To get the direction needed to develop the final product, we had to go through four main steps. During that we did two rounds of user testing and rapid prototyping.

Pilot Study with Gig Harbor High School

The FINAO app has been introduced to a class of students at Gig Harbor High School. After two weeks of usage, a survey was shared with the class to collect feedback.

"Hard to navigate and understand at first"
"It was kind of confusing at the beginning"
"The layout is a little confusing and could use some improvement"
quotes from participants.

Usability Testing

We conducted usability testing with seven participants. We started each session with the think a loud method where we asked participants to execute several tasks while continuously thinking out loud. We ended each session with an open discussion about the app. The following is a summary of the main findings:

Pain Points

  • There was confusion about the concept of posting to FINAOS
  • Search was too complicated (too many options to chose from)
  • The app language was not clear -> what is Tile? What is FINAO?
  • There is a need to follow Users not just FINAOs
  • The left Nav was great, but it had too many options/links

Positive Points

  • Was easy to invite friends
  • Groups were easy to use
  • Participants love the positivity of the app

Brainstorming

After going over the results of the usability testing and prioritizing the findings, we started brainstorming different solutions for the top priority items. The picture to the right shows some of the sketches used during the brainstorming exercises. At the end, the team picked their top three (out of eight) favorite concepts.

Focus Group

After rapidly prototyping the three concepts that were picked from the previous stage, we invited a group of student for a second round of user testing. We started the session by introducing the old version of the app and explaining the purpose of the study. Then we walked the participants through the new concepts utilizing Invision prototypes. Participants were given forms to collect their individual feedback first, then we opened the floor for an open discussion.

The outcome was to adopt concept 1 and borrow some ideas from concept 2 and 3.

Final Design

During this project we managed to dramatically improve the user experience of the FINAO app by:

  • Bridging the gap between FINAOS and Posts using a new user flow
  • Giving better direction on how to create FINAOS and posts
  • Cleaning the navigation of the app
  • Simplifying the design of the app
